- Welcome To Bali Paradise Island

Author By Bali Dwipa

Bali Island

Bali TourismBali, the fabled "Island of the Gods", has been enchanting visitor for centuries with its rich cultural traditions and spectacular panoramas. From lofty, mist enshrouded volcanos and cool mountain lakes down through terraced rice fields to a golden strand lapped by azure waters, every square inch of Bali offers a fresh and unforgettable image.
No less enchanting are its people, some 2.7 million souls whose artistry and piety are recognized trhoughout the world. Balinese Hinduism, a complex fusion of Indian cosmology, Tantric Buddhism and home-grown mythology, is the primary faith of Bali's inhabitans, and so deeply woven into the fabric of their daily lives that the line between the spiritual and the material is blurry the best.

Those you keen on delving into the island's fascinating culture will have plenty of opportunities, as colourful ceremonies and traditional performances occur with the regularity of sunrise. Most hotels offer nightly dance shows of one form or another, tailored to tourist audiences but none the less exquisite. The hill town of Ubud, the island's premier arts centre, also has a full schedule of performances, and nearby stone-cutters's village of Batubulan is famed for its Barong lion dances.
The soppers among you will find Bali treasure house of handicrafts and fine works of art.

The Balinese are incredibly gifted artists and craftsmen, and their material creations are imbued with the same sense of wonderment with which they regard their universe. Stone and wood carving, traditional paintings and intricately designed jewelry in gold and silver are readily available in shops and galleries throught the island.

Bedugul, BaliBali is just one of the many small islands of Indonesia, but without a doubt, it is one of the most famous islands of Indonesia. Bali is frequently referred to as "The Paradise Island" because of its reputation in the world as a tropical paradise of untold beautiful nature, idyllic mood and never ending fascination. The island is also known as "The Island of Gods" because worship colors every facet of life among the Hindu Balinese in their daily activities. Bali occupies an area of only about 6,000 square kilometers. The longest distance is about 140 kilometers. Bali is located just off the eastern tip of Java, from which it is separated by the narrow Bali Straits. Immediately to its east is the island of Lompok, across the Lombok straits. On the south and north side of the island is flanked by the Indian Ocean and Java Sea, respectively. The island lies eight degrees south of the equator.

Hills and mountains fill the central parts of the island, running along an east-west axis which is naturally adorned by beautiful lakes and rivers winding slowly to the clean sea water. The highest mountain in Bali is Mount Agung (3,142 m) where the Besakih Mother Temple is located on its slope.
The island of Bali is a province of Indonesia, and is administered by a governor. With a population of approximately three million people and most of them are Hindu, Bali is one of the most densely populated territories of Indonesia. The province of Bali consists of eight regencies and a municipality of Denpasar which is also the capital city of Bali.

The Balinese warm hospitality comes naturally which is believed will be not encountered elsewhere. Bali has become very famous for tourist and artists from all over the world since the 1920's. They have been coming to Bali since that time, when air travel was in its infancy and sea travel was considered extravagant.
Bali nowadays has become one of the most popular and interesting tourist destination in central Indonesia and has been appointed by the government to be the center and pilot project of tourism development. Current statistics show over a million international visitors come to Bali annually and most of them disembark at Ngurah Rai International Airport and some at Benoa and Padangbai ports on cruise ships. Those arriving by overland from Java disembark at Gilimanuk port in west Bali.

Bali beachesBali has a great range of accommodations from very basic home stays up to international five star/diamond class hotels spread out on the beach resorts of Nusa Dua, Sanur, Jimbaran, Kuta, Candidasa, Lovina and the mountain resorts of Bedugul, Kintamani, and also at the wonderful rice field area of Ubud (art village). A wide range of day tours are available to the main temples and other sightseeing locations. Besides the local Bemo transport system, extensive tourist coaches operate throughout the island.

For the sport lovers a wide selection of marine sports (e.g. surfing, diving, fishing, cruising, etc.), adventure tours (e.g. white water rafting, cycling, trekking, etc.) and international standard golf courses are available.

Bali is also an ideal venue for shoppers, offering an amazing wide range of quality items at reasonable prices including leather goods, clothing using traditional fabrics, wood carvings and antiques as well as gold and silver works. The Balinese have always been famous for their superb craftsmanship in a variety of materials: stone, wood, silver and even bone. They are also famous for their paintings and textiles. Craft skills are applied in a multitude styles from the purely traditional to avant-garde and those can be easily found at the art & souvenir shops throughout the island. Duty free goods can also be found at selected duty free shops.

- Bali voted as The World`s Best Resort Island

Author By Bali Dwipa

Travel + Leisure Magazine’s 11th Annual World’s Best Awards 2006 voted Bali as the Best Island Resort in the World and in Asia. Deputy Indonesian Ambassador to the US Andri Hadi and Acting Consul General in New York Harbangan Napitupulu received the citation here on Thursday.

"The Indonesian people and government, particularly the Balinese, are proud of learning that Bali has received such citation. It is expected the citation will improve the international community`s confidence in constantly choosing Indonesia, Bali in particular, as one of their most favorite tourist destinations," Indonesian Ambassador to the US Sudjadnan Parno Hadiningrat, said.

According to the ambassador, the citation proves that the interest of the international community, the US in particular, in coming to Indonesia has not declined, despite the US government`s travel advisory to its nationals wishing to go to Indonesia.

It is the seventh citation of its kind. Bali received the first one in 1998 and since 2002 up to now Bali, dubbed as an Island of Gods, the island always received the citation.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan ranked 2nd, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay (5th) and Ritz-Carlton Bali Resort & Spa (7th) as The World`s Best Hotels. The survey results, including the Top 100 Hotels Worldwide, are featured in the August issue of Travel + Leisure, the world's leading travel magazine, and online at http://www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest/2006/

The magazine also presented citations to Florence in Italy as the best city and Singapore Airlines as one of the world`s best airline company.

- Bali's Religion

author by Sawadee travel forum

When you step your feet in Bali (Balinese people call it Gumi Bali) you feel religious atmosphere very much which is closely related with situation of Bali. It is hard to express the feeling in Bali, except by involving ourselves in it. The feeling flows strongly from the holy spring of Balinese with its estuary of Hindu Religion, as most of Balinese people adheres Hindu Religion.

Since beginning, Bali Island was created as an Island of God, the throne of Gods. Many people called God as Ida Bhatara. However, the essence known and inspired as the term NYA is Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. If there is any term of Dewa or Bhatara, it is the manifestation of the greatness of God or Atman in Hindu perspective.

In conducting the essence of life, Balinese adhere Hindu Religion are supported with three basic concepts, namely: tattwa, susila, and upacara.

Tattwa

Tattwa includes Panca Sraddha, the five belief adhered by Hindu religion, such as :

1. Widhi Tattwa, the ceremony to Sang Hyang Widhi with all His dimensions.

2. Atma Tattwa, the belief with the existence of Atma, the soul providing life all human being.

3. Karmaphala, the belief of the existence of causal law of the behaviors. It means that every behavior has causal dimension to the behavior itself.

4. Punarbawa, the belief of reincarnation.

5. Moksa, the belief of the eternal life of the end of human journey where atman unites with Sang Hyang Widhi (paramatman).

In Hindu perspective, God is known as a term of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, which means God, Almighty. The God is only one, though He has various names. From the various names of God, there are three which are well known by the adherers of Hindu in Bali, namely, Brahma, Visnu and Siva, which are called as Tri Murti.
Brahma is the Dimension of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as the creator (utpatti), Visnu is the manifestation of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as the caretaker (sthiti) and Siwa is the manifestation of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as the destroyer (praline). That's why Balinese believe that all the creation of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa will face the cycle of birth, life and death.
The essence of power of Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa is expressed by every family of Hindu in Bali in Pemrajan, Sangah or the place of worshipping in every house, dadya, village as well as Jagad Bali.

Susila

Susila is the aspect of Hindu religion implementation organizing good and right behavior. The basic of Susila learning is Tattwam Asi. By applying the good and right instruction will produce harmonious and suitable interaction among the people. Even, in Hindu it is not only known the interaction among the people but also interaction between mankind and God and between mankind and nature as understood in the concept of Tri Hita Karana.

Tattwam Asi is meant as I is You, You is I. Thus, if we hurt other people, it means we also hurt ourselves. As in the Tattwam Asi concept, every human being is the same, as it is derived from the only paramatman.

The operational concept of susila with Tattwam Asi philosophy is expressed in Tri Kaya Parisuddha, or three good and right behavior, such as :
1. Manacika Parisuddha
2. Wacika Parisuddha
3. Kayika Parisuddha

Manacika is having a holy and right thinking. Wacika is having a good and right word. Kayika is having a good and right behavior. Thus, the concept of Tri kaya Parisuddha is having the right thinking, words and behavior.

Upacara

Upacara (Ceremony) in Hindu perspective is a kind yadnya (sacrifice) expressed in Panca Yadnya which consists of:

1. Dewa Yadnya is a holy sacrifice to Sang Hyang Widhi held in the form of ceremony in jagad, sad kahyangan and village temples.
2. Rsi Yadnya is a holy sacrifice to priests or holy persons by learning the holy books of Hindu and disseminates it.
3. Manusia Yadnya is a ceremony for people since their birth to adult. Visually, the implementation of manusia yadnya ceremony is also expressed by conducting myadnya for poor people, isfortune people and so forth.
4. Pitra Ydnya is a holy sacrifice for ancestors from funeral ceremony, cremation to the ceremony of ngasti and so forth.
5. Bhuta Yadnya is a holy sacrifice for evil spirit called bhuta. This ceremony is often expressed to somya the evil spirit immaterially. Materially, Bhuta Yadnya ceremony is also for the animals and plants by taking care of them.

- Balinese Art

Talking about Bali will not complete without admiring its arts. The art of Bali flows like the daily life of its people. The inspiration seems never stop to inspire its artists. And the art itself makes people stay longer in Bali and even come again and again.

Art for Balinese is not merely for art. Art has been part of life for Balinese society. Therefore, there is almost no art in Bali that does not leave from philosophical guidance and utterance to conduct the life.

In the previous period, Balinese artists did arts for dedication and worshipping. Even, many artists experienced nadi (trance) during the performance of the arts. It shows that the creativity of arts owned by the artists reflects taksu (power). With the culture of ngayah (work voluntarily), Balinese artists surrender themselves to their God, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi. Ngayah is a foundation reflecting creative energy of artists. From this artists are created various art works.

Arts in Bali exist in various fields of arts, such as, Seni Rupa (sculpture), Seni Tari (dance), Seni Kerawitan (music), Seni Pedalangan (shadow play puppetry), Seni Arsitektur (architecture), Seni Sastra (literature) to Seni Busana (fashion). They spread over as if covering the earth of Bali. That's why, if we come during the big ceremony in Besakih or Batur Temple or in other temples everywhere in Bali, we will see stream of arts in Bali flowing full of touch.

"NADI"
"Trance in The Balinese Art"

Balinese arts & culture have always held mystery & romance for art enthusiasts & foreign audiences, but often skepticism also. Few westerners believe Balinese Dances are anything more than show & are designed & performed for no other purpose than to attract tourist dollars. Hopefully some of this western cynicism & skepticism will be curtailed by writing such as this, "opening up the world behind the art".

We try to justify & demystify nadi. To show its significance in Balinese culture & religion that are so closely interwoven it is often impossible to differentiate between the two. All three, nadi, Balinese culture & Balinese religion are often misunderstood in other cultures. We aim to deepen people's cultural knowledge, under the belief that "awareness creates closeness & love, & nearness to the creator." It aims to increase the number of art lovers, in particular lovers of Balinese art forms.

It makes you aware of yet another aspect, perhaps the most important aspect, of the diverse arts of Bali. These traditions & strong beliefs attached to nadi are an everyday part of Balinese life. It even delves into the scientific, psychological & physiological realms with supporting evidence from a Psychologist

Nadi, or kerauhan, is defined as "the move from physical & mental normality into an abnormal, or "trance" condition." Phenomenon like nadi exists in most cultures but perhaps is not so indelibly imprinted & interwoven with everyday life as this story shows is the case in Bali

Nadi or trance is a state of consciousness & unconsciousness. It is diverse in forms, practices & importance. Nadi is essential in Balinese art & believed to have a significant impact on the arts. With nadi the quality of the art is developed & it is given added value. The transforming power given to artists entering the state of nadi is called Taksu (Spiritual Power). Actors, dancers, puppeteers & musicians may enter nadi when performing, & it is believed poets & visual artists may also enter nadi.

It is written by Balinese to try to clarify some of the mysteries of nadi, & to alleviate the inaccuracies that often find their way into books written from a foreign point of view. Local people are able to portray the people & their arts more accurately. It is translated into English since the intended reader is not Balinese. The English translation is not perfect but don't let this deter you from reading & understanding its content. It will change the way you look at Balinese arts.

" Taksu"
"Never Ending Art Creativity"

"Taksu, Never Ending Art Creativity" is written by Balinese people to help bring to the world culturally, historically & religiously correct information about the little known & understood practices behind traditional Balinese Art, and to highlight the significance of cultural & religious beliefs in art

It explores the connection between art & religion suggesting Balinese art is in fact part of religious celebration, an offering to god. In order to make this offering as pleasing as possible, the artists seek divine assistance to perfect their art form.

It looks at the history of Balinese Art before tourism, in fact even before Hinduism came to the island & the background of the beliefs that are so very important to the people of Bali. It explores European influences: the changes brought about under Dutch colonialism, with the arrival of western artists, then through the influx of tourists in the 20th Century.

Taksu (spiritual Power) is the power given to artists entering the state of nadi, a trance-like state. Actors, dancers, puppeteers & musicians may enter nadi when performing, & it is believed poets & visual artists may also enter nadi, & in doing so gain Taksu.

Taksu, used by Balinese Artists to make their art successful, & therefore more pleasing to god, is an inner power.

Balinese artists often go on pilgrimages to get Taksu. They may study then visit temples believed to be a source of Taksu. They pray to the god Siwa to give them Taksu.

The section on Balinese maestros, like Mario, Lempad, Tjokot & others, is a fascinating insight into the real people behind Balinese Art.

Read & gain a wealth of knowledge & a new understanding of the traditions & strong beliefs which demonstrate the inter-relationship between arts, culture, religion & daily life of the people of Bali.

Throughout the world many aspire to great art through study & practice. It is often said that an artist is "a natural", born with a "god-given" artistic talent, but after reading this you may realize that these "naturals" have in fact found "Taksu".

Some of the art communities
